Program provides opportunity for Veterans to pursue farming careers

by Ron Selfors | Jul 14, 2014

Jefferson City, MO.  We had a great turnout for our first Veterans to Farmers workshop. Lincoln University hosted us in Jefferson City, Mo. on Saturday. We were introduced to organic farming, bee-keeping, raising chickens and fish, and the use of cover crops and native plants. We also visited the Farmer Market, talked with farmer-vendors and had a great lunch featuring local and native plant produce.

The next event in the series will be held in St. Robert at the Hampton Inn (tentative) from 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday, September 13. This workshop will focus on the resources available to veterans to start an ag-business. We are looking for veterans who want to or have started an agri-business, either part or full time. Disabled vets are also welcome. We will be looking at the whole spectrum of farming - field and specialty crops, small and large animals, bees, and agri-services. Call Ron Selfors at 573-855-8312 to reserve a seat. Family members are also invited. No cost plus a free lunch.
